Effort underway to get a voter verification system in the state

IOWA (AP) -- Iowa Secretary of State Mat Schultz wants a way to confirm voter identities.

During this year's election almost half of the voters in Iowa voted early or by absentee ballot.

Schultz would like state lawmakers to look at creating a procedure based on similar procedures that are used in Washington and Oregon.

In both of those states machines are used to read the signature on the absentee ballot envelope and compare it against the one on the voter's registration records.

At least one county in the state is working on its own verification system that it will present to the legislature before the beginning of session in January.
