FORT MADISON, IOWA -- During the demolition of an abandoned building in downtown Fort Madison, the construction company found what could be contaminated soil.

The construction site is on the corner of eighth street and Avenue G.

According to the City manager Byron Smith, the next step is to send some of the soil to the Department of Natural resources.

The city decided to tear down the building because its condition became a safety hazard.

The property was abandoned by its owner about five years ago after the owner went bankrupt.

The city was paying for the demolition which is now on hold until they find out if the soil is contaminated. Smith hopes to have the results from the DNR by next week.
