PITTSFIELD, ILL. -- A Pearl, Ill. man accused of providing heroin to a woman who later died was in court Thursday.

John R. Edgar, 24, was charged with drug-induced homicide Oct. 31 in connection with the death of 47-year-old Shanda M. Lopez of Milton. She was pronounced dead at her home Sept. 26.

Investigators said that Lopez died as a result of opiate intoxication, or a heroin overdose.

It's believe he took heroin to her in the late evening hours the night before she died.

Edgar was scheduled for arraignment Thursday, but the reading of formal charges was continued until Jan. 8.

Edgar was originally being held on a $200,000 bond, but it was later reduced to $100,000.

He remains in the Pike County Jail.
