QUINCY, ILL. -- There are many food pantries in the tri-state are that serve people on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. But one food pantry in Quincy gets a monthly shipment so large, the product ends up getting shared with more than just its clients.
That's why GPS Ministries makes sure that some of their donations are shared with food pantries all over town.
About once a month, a pickup truck pulls up to the GPS Ministry building and it's loaded with more then 2,000 pounds of raw potatoes. The potatoes are sacked and stacked ready for people who are in need of assistance. P.J. Seals is the CEO of the ministry and she said they're able to help people who have fallen through the social service cracks and a monthly donation like this goes a long way.
"And that's what we want to do, we want to fill out sacks.and continue to help fill as many bags as we can and then give them good quality non perishable food products and that makes it go a lot farther," Seals said.
And as the potatoes were dropped off at GPS, the truckload then went to the Horizons Food Pantry just a few blocks away. Mark Geissler is the manager there and he said donations like this help not just the food pantry but also the soup kitchen.
"Those potatoes have a great way of extending the total food product that people can take home with them. We're very blessed to receive a lot from the community and this is one of those things that make a holistic food donation," Geissler said.
Seals said her ministry helps anyone who's in need. If it's a case of being in a crisis food is given to the client right away. Otherwise people can get a food basket once a month. She just asks that if people can, they donate an hour or two back to the ministry to help with organizing food baskets for others. A program that serves the community and also donates to the community.
