HANNIBAL, MO. -- If the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, that saying probably goes for women, too, especially when it comes to sweets on Valentine's Day.

Marketing research shows the week of February 14th is the top-seller for specialty desserts.

Last Valentine's Day was one of the busiest days of the year for Amanda Wisdom at The Sweetest Thing Bakery and Donut Shop in Hannibal. This year, she's preparing for it.

"I think we'll start baking at least by midnight and do what we can the night before," Wisdom said.

One of her best sellers of the day was chocolate covered strawberries.

"It was crazy - we sold probably 50 dozen strawberries," Wisdom said.

But you don't need to pay big bucks for this sweet treat - you can make it at home.

"We buy special chocolate that's milky and delicious but you can buy it at the store," Wisdom said. "Just melt it in the microwave and then just dip it."

Wisdom says you also can try to make the classics like cakes and cookies, just cut them out into a heart shape. If this is your first time baking, Wisdom says to be fearless.

"Just find a good recipe and then just wing it from there," Wisdom said. "Just do what you can and I'm sure they'll love it because they're your sweetheart."
