CANTON, MO. -- Kevin Urbeck fell in love with the guitar at a Kenny Chesney concert in 4th grade. He's been playing it ever since.

"It's like a musical poetic therapy for me," Urbeck said. "If I'm ever having a bad day I could pull it out and play for hours and everything just kind of melts away."

Urbeck took one official guitar class in high school but he got bored with it and quit. He's basically been teaching himself how to play, until now.

"He's catching me up on the theory side of things as far as scales and actual notes go," Urbeck said. "Before that I was just winging it."

The teacher that's managed to keep Urbeck's attention is Jesse Mazzoccoli.

"I'm not brilliant or I'm not a genius," Mazzoccoli said. "I'm just somebody who practices a lot and I'm very hard headed. I've found something I wanted to do and I didn't want to do anything else."

Mazzoccoli teaches a guitar class at Culver-Stockton College and will help teach a Guitar Masterclass there this weekend (get an inside look to a guitar masterclass, here.)

"It's a good way for you to improve techniques whether you are a beginner or a professional," Mazzoccoli said.

Urbeck hopes to improve one thing.

"I've only played once and that was at a senior high school talent show," Urbeck said. "I'm hoping to get rid of some nerves and stage fright."

Then, that's all Mazzoccoli wants, too.

"It's almost like you get to take a little credit for that no matter where they go or what they do," Mazzoccoli said. "It's a good feeling to know I had a hand in that."

The Guitar Masterclass will be held Saturday on the Culver-Stockton Campus in Canton at 6 p.m. followed by a recital. Click here for more information.
