QUINCY, ILL. -- Area homeless will have a new place to lay down their heads in Quincy.

The Salvation Army opened its new emergency shelter at 501 Broadway in Quincy Friday evening.

Shelter operations have been running out of a facility at 18th and Seminary Road for several years after the former shelter was torn down to build the Kroc Center.

The new shelter features a community room that can also double as extra sleeping quarters if needed.

There are also individual and family bedrooms.

A new full kitchen and pantry are also available to meet the needs of the homeless in our community.

Major Andy Miller says he wants the new facility to be a safe haven for those in need.

Miller says, "To have our own place, to have a place that the people will be able to call home, that is bright and feels like your home, it means so much to people that we'll be serving both in our shelter and in our emergency services."

Although the shelter has officially opened, the grand opening and dedication ceremony will be on May 30th.

Major Miller says that there are discussions to make even more services available through the shelter in the future.
