LEWIS COUNTY, MO. -- The names of the two men killed in a late-night plane crash in Northeast Missouri have been released.

John R. Johnson, 74, of Carbondale, and Carl S. Maiden, 47, of DuQuoin, Ill. died late Wednesday as they were flying to an antique air show in Iowa, Lewis County Sheriff David Parrish confirmed Thursday morning.

Parrish said that the plane left Pinckneyville-DuQuoin Airport near Pinckneyville, Ill. Wednesday night and crashed near Canton, Mo.

Federal Aviation Administration officials have not arrived on the scene to begin their investigation in the crash as of 9:44 a.m., Parrish said.

FAA records show that a plane that crashed in Lewis County Wednesday night was owned by Johnson.

FAA spokesman Tony Molinaro stressed that the information featured on the agency's Web site does not necessarily reflect who was on the plane when it crashed.

Officials also identified the model of a plane as a Piper P-23, often known as a Piper Apache aircraft.

The plane was manufactured in 1956 and is a fixed-wing, multi-engine aircraft.

FAA investigators are en route to the crash scene Thursday morning. Molinaro said that the FAA will conduct the initial investigation and forward its findings to the National Transportation Safety Board. The NTSB will make a final determination as to what caused the crash. That part of the investigation could take up to nine months.
