Coalition wants money to repair and maintain state roads

IOWA (AP) -- Iowa Governor Terry Branstad says that he would consider a increase in state taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel but only under certain conditions.

The Associated General Contractors of Iowa have teamed up the Iowa Farm Bureau and the Iowa Bankers Association in an effort to push state legislators to support a 10 cent increase in state taxes.

The money would be used to help cover a $215 million shortfall in annual funding for improvements and maintenance on Iowa's roadways.

A spokesman for the governor says that he would consider a tax, but only if it is part of a overall tax reform package that would reduce taxes for all Iowans.
