JEFFERSON CITY, MO (AP) -- Local governments could once again be able to collect sales taxes on cars bought outside the state under a bill being considered by the Missouri Senate.

The Senate is expected to vote on a bill next week that would reverse a state Supreme Court decision that bars local governments from collecting taxes on such sales.

Counties and municipalities have already lost a combined $43 million in revenue since the court's decision.

Republican Sen. Mike Kehoe, a former car dealership owner, is sponsoring the bill. The measure would allow counties and cities to start collecting the sales tax, but would require them to seek voter approval between November 2014 and November 2016.

The measure received initial approval last week, but needs another vote before moving to the House.
