Army Corps of Engineers going ahead with plans

ILLINOIS (AP) -- Water from the upper Mississippi River reservoir will be released to try and prevent the closure of the river at St. Louis.

An Army Corps of Engineers official ordered the release from the reservoir in Minnesota.

It will add about 3-6 inches of depth at St. Louis, but that is unfortunately far short of the expected drop that will come when the corps slows down the flow of the Missouri River next week.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and Illinois Governor Pat Quinn have both expressed their concerns about that plan in letters to the Army Corps of Engineers.

Both governors are fearful barge traffic will be affected by the reducing the flow of the Missouri into the Mississippi River.
