FORT MADISON, IOWA -- The Fort Madison Fire Department responded to a major fire Saturday morning in downtown Fort Madison at approximately 4 a.m. in the area of 6th and Avenue G.
Fire fighters from Montrose, West Point, and Keokuk were called to assist in putting out the fire.
There are no reports of any injuries.
The fire was settled by 6:30 a.m.
The building that caught on fire was formerly a motel, but was vacant for many years.
Two local businesses rented spaces in this building.
This building was going to be a part of a renovation project funded by a recently received community redevelopment block grant.
Fort Madison Fire Chief Joey Herren says that the building is a complete loss and that the fire began in the middle of the building, spreading outward in the shape of a "V."
Herren is unsure about the cause of the fire.
