A Pearl, Ill. man charged with providing heroin to a woman who later died of a drug overdose has asked for a bond reduction.

John R. Edgar, 24, was charged with drug-induced homicide on Oct. 31.

An arrest warrant was issued for Edgar following an investigation that began Sept. 26 in to the death of Shanda M. Lopez, 47, of Milton. She was pronounced dead at her home that day.

Edgar appeared in Pike County Court Tuesday with his court appointed attorney Keisha Morris.

He waived is preliminary hearing and is scheduled to return to court Dec. 11 to ask for his bond to be reduced from $100,000.

If Edgar posts 10-percent of his bond, he would be relegated to home confinement.

Investigators said Lopez took heroin in the late evening hours the night before her death. Authorities said that Edgar provided her with the heroin.

Sheriff Paul Petty previously said the charge of drug-induced homicide is rarely used in his rural community. He said the charge is much more prevalent in metropolitan areas in the state. He said the charge is similar to a reckless homicide charge if a person is charged with killing someone while driving a motor vehicle.
