QUINCY, ILL. -- Quincy Catholic Elementary Schools Foundation honored Ray Heilmann Saturday night at the 2013 Friend of Catholic Education Award Dinner.

Heilmann received the 2013 Quincy Catholic Elementary Schools (QCES) Foundation's Friend of Catholic Education Award. It recognizes his many years of service to Quincy Notre Dame and his support for Quincy's Catholic Elementary Schools.

"This is a very touching one for me, because I have been blessed to be apart of Quincy Notre Dame for 39 years, which means that I was also the recipient of all the great students from the Catholic grade schools, because that's our major feeder system. So, it's a big thanks from me to them," Heilmann said during a dinner at the Holiday Inn, in Quincy.

Established in 2009, the award recognizes a person, couple or organization whose contributions have significantly fostered and strengthened Catholic schools in the Quincy community.

Heilmann served as an English teacher and assistant football coach for nine years and as the assistant principal for 13 years before he retired from Quincy Notre Dame in June 2012.

In 1995, Heilmann was named as the first lay principal in the 128 year history of Quincy Notre Dame High School, a position he held until his retirement.

Heilmann joins the Friends of Catholic Education club with former recipients, Charles A. Scholz, Rich and Connie Nieman, The Tracy Family, Pam Potter and Dan Sherman.
