QUINCY, ILL. -- When most people think of Indian Mounds in Quincy, they probably think of the pool. But there are actually indian burial grounds inside Indian Mounds Park.

This Saturday, a free blessing of the mounds ceremony is going on at the park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Volunteers have been working hard restoring the mounds the last several months, including Native Americans from nine tribes. Those volunteers are anxious to show off their hard work.

"First of all, we want to educate the public that these mounds are even here. We have a rich Native American history," archeologist Steve Tieken said. "We also want to show people what's we've done to the park to restore these mounds."

Tieken says at one point, there were about 10,000 Native American mounds in Illinois.

These days there area less than 500 ... about 25 of those are right here in Quincy.

Starting at 10, there will be dedicatory prayers and blessings followed by a sacred pipe ceremony lead by The Standing Bear Council.

From 11 to 12:30 there will be an archaeological walking tour of the mounds.

From 1 to 3:30, The Black Fox Singers will perform.

The group is a traditional southern style Native American drum and singing group.

From 4 to 5 you can enjoy a potluck dinner provided by local restaurants and volunteers.
