Before you get out your swim suit and make a splash at the pool this summer, remember to keep your skin safe.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States with more than 3.5 million cases diagnosed annually. Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. 

These startling statistics are reasons to understand the importance of safeguarding against this deadly disease. Early detection and prevention are both key.

For many people, avoiding exposure to sunlight completely, is nearly impossible.

Dr. Ethan Philpott with Quincy Medical Group offers some alternative ideas for those who find themselves soaking up the rays.

"Wear protective clothing or some type of sunscreen, darker clothing that you can not see through." Dr. Philpott said.
