Midwest farmers are selling stalks as feed
MISSOURI (AP) -- Nothing is going to waste on some farms in the Midwest.
Because of the drought some farmers are selling old corn stalks that are usually thrown away, as feed for cattle.
Hay has been in short supply for many farmers this year.
A report from the Missouri Department of Agriculture says that farmers are getting between between $35 to 45$ for a large round bale or between $60 to $100 dollars per ton for those discarded stalks, also known as corn stover.
A growing interest in harvesting the corn stover is leading equipment manufacturers to build round balers that are designed specifically to handle discarded corn stalks.
