UPDATE

BURLINGTON, IOWA -- Burlington fire crews continue to investigate what caused a suspicious apartment fire early Saturday.

Battalion Chief Bruce Workman said the fire broke out around 1 a.m. on the second floor of an apartment building at 1107 Vine St.

The eight unit complex, owned by Dennis Wilson, was home to ten residents at the time of the fire. Flames forced a handful of second floor tenants out nearby fire escapes.

In all, 24 firefighters from Burlington and West Burlington responded to the blaze. They contained the fire within two hours and stayed on scene until 5 a.m. monitoring hot spots. The building suffered extensive damage to the second floor hallway and attic space. Workman says the amount of damage is unknown at this point, but the building is insured.

Fortunately, no one was injured, but four dogs were lost in the fire. The local Red Cross chapter arrived on site to help tenants find shelter and clothing.

This was the second fire in less than 12 hours in Burlington. Fire crews also responded to a house fire off Sycamore St. Friday. They determined the cause of the kitchen fire was a pan of grease left unattended.

Battalion Chief Ken Morris said an Iowa State Fire Marshal will continue investigation on Tuesday.
