New state rules prevent machine ownership
CARTHAGE, ILL. -- Carthage residents are still able to play their favorite gaming machines.
The Hancock Journal Pilot reports that last week the Carthage City Council voted unanimously to to pass an ordinace to allow establishments with liquor licenses to operate gaming machines like video poker in their businesses.
A new law in Illinois prevents bar and restaurant owners from owning gaming machines.
Instead the state will decided how many machines a business can have and will also get part of the profits from those machines.
The state will also take the profits from gaming machines and split them three ways between the state, the vendor and the bar or restaurant.
The new ordinance is also a good deal for the city. It will get five percent of the profits and a $25 dollar fee for each machine.
