ADAMS COUNTY, ILL. -- It was a huge night for Adams County Democrats.

Dozens of candidates and supporters showed up at the Machinists Lodge Tuesday night to watch as the results came in.

Adams County Democrats added a Circuit Clerk, retained a State Senator, and celebrated a huge national win. For the newly reelected Illinois State Senator John Sullivan, the battle was not easily won.

"It's been a tough, brutal campaign. There's no doubt about it," Il. Sen. John Sullivan, (D) 47th District said.

Sullivan beat Republican challenger Randy Frese, who decided not to run for reelection to his Circuit Clerk Office in favor of running for the state senator spot.

"The voters and the public trusted me for my message and what I've tried to do. My message has been trying to work together to find solutions to complex problems,"Sullivan said.

Frese's former Circuit Clerk office will now be held by democrat Lori Geschwandner. Geschwandner beat republican challenger Laura Kent Donahue, who coincidentally lost her state senate seat to John Sullivan when he was first elected to the position. The new Circuit Clerk attributes some of her success to her lack of political background.

"I've never been in politics and I think that makes it easier to relate to somebody," Geschwandner said.

Geschwandner spent fifteen years working in the Circuit Clerk office.

"I think the office will transition very smoothly, we have a great staff, we work very well together and we're going to move forward," she explained.

Democrats did lose Adams County Board seats.
