HANNIBAL -- The Hannibal Police Department has to qualify in shooting at least twice a year.

For that, the department has it's own shooting range, or at least used to.

It's in the process of building a new range at the city landfill in Ralls County.

The old range off of Paris Gravel Road, had too much new development around it.

Police Chief Lyndell Davis tells us it was too much of a safety and liability issue, so he decided to close that range, and begin work on a new one.

"Fortunately enough, Mississippi Valley Gun Range has been generous to allow us to do our basic applications. But, there's some more advanced type training we do, like silloutte targets that we felt we needed our own range," says Davis.

Chief Davis tells us a few years ago, the department was left some money in a bequest.

He wanted to use the money for something that would be around for awhile, so when it came time for the new range, they put that money to use.
