CHEROKEE, IOWA (AP) -- Hy-Vee plans to expand its distribution center in Cherokee in northwest Iowa.
The Iowa-based supermarket company has announced plans for a $17 million expansion that will add 230,000 square feet to the 435,000 square-foot warehouse. The addition will create up to 12 new jobs.
The project is expected to be complete in 10 months.
Todd Hockenson, assistant vice president of distribution, says the warehouse has run out of room and the company has had to store merchandise in trailers and a smaller building on the property.
The Cherokee warehouse is the distribution point for dry goods, such as paper towels, canned fruits and potato chips, for 77 Hy-Vee stores in western Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota. It also handles general merchandise for the company's 223 stores in seven states.
