Benefit held in Quincy to raise money for man fighting cancer
QUINCY, IL -- An outpour of community members came to Backwaters in Quincy Sunday afternoon to help one brave man battle his fight against cancer.
21year old Greg Havermale was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma.
Family and friends held a benefit to raise money to help the Havermale family pay for thousands of dollars in medical expenses. There were raffles, food and music. One organizer told KHQA, it's great to have a strong support system.
" I did not know the response we'd get. I thought it was going to be family and close friends, and there are people here we haven't seen for years. But it doesn't matter, because when someone's in need, people come out and they go for it," said benefit organizer Maria Ebhardt.
" The support's been great. As you can see, there's a bunch of people I don't even know. Some of these people that showed up, so the community support's been great," said Greg Havermale, who's fighting the disease.
Havermale is about half way through his treatment. He plans to finish his senior year at the University of Missouri next fall. He also plans to be an officer in the army ROTC program.
