Fall weather may have you firing up your outdoor fire pits.
TRI-STATE AREA -- Fall weather may have you firing up your outdoor fire pits.
But before you do we want to make sure you know the rules.
Open burning is allowed in Quincy and Macomb by permit only.
Keokuk and Hannibal allow open burning during some parts of the year, but it depends on the weather conditions.
Fires kept in fire pits and small chimneys are always permitted if someone is watching it.
Keokuk and Hannibal allow residents to burn natural yard waste, while Quincy and Macomb only allow fire wood.
Burning lumber and garbage is always prohibited in all four areas.
Fire prevention officer John Baker told us a few more ways you can keep your self safe.
"If they have some sort of enclosure like cement blocks that works good," said Baker. "The main thing is don't burn on a really windy day. Just use common sense and have someone out there that can attend to the fire thats responsible."
Baker says you need to have a plan if a fire does get out of hand.
You also need to make sure any fire is far enough away from any structure.
In Macomb it has to be at least 25 feet away and in Hannibal it has to be atleast 50 feet.
