QUINCY, ILL. -- We're still hearing quite a bit of buzz about the arbitrator's ruling regarding three Quincy firefighters a couple of days ago.
Bruce Oitker got his job back.
Demoted assistant chief Mark Bigelow will move up in rank from lieutenant to captain, with back pay.
And firefighter Sean Dean did not get his job back.
The investigation into personal e-mails, phone calls and other contact between the three men and three women also employed by the city took months and cost tens of thousand of dollars.
Quincy Mayor John Spring was at an out-of-town conference when the arbitrator's decision came down.
KHQA's Rajah Maples caught up with him between meetings Thursday afternoon.
Looking back, is there anything you think the city or you or the Police and Fire Commission could've or would've done differently?
Mayor Spring, "I don't believe so. I think the issues were very serious issues. I think any time you have these errors in judgement in the private sector, they would've been exited immediately. Here, there's a process. I'm not opposed to the process. No, I don't feel it was a wate of our time. I think we did the right thing."
Rajah also checked back with Fire Chief Scott Walker Thursday afternoon.
Walker met with the Board of Police and Fire Commissioners to discuss the details late Wednesday afternoon.
He told us the meeting was mostly informational and that no definite plans came out of it.
However, Walker told us the arbitrator's ruling is pretty straightforward....meaning the employees who were promoted following Sean Dean's and Bruce Oitker's dismissal will be demoted to accommodate the ruling.
