Safety seat check finds that many car seats fail

HANNIBAL, MO -- Did you know that four out of five car seats are installed incorrectly?

Safe Kids Northeast Missouri and the Hannibal Fire Department teamed up this weekend to help families make sure their bundles of joy are safe as they travel this holiday season.

When KHQA made a stop at the fire station in Hannibal early Saturday morning, only five cars had been through the seat check. Julina Kirby with Safe Kids told us, all but one failed. Kirby says she's not surprised, because many parents aren't aware of the little things.

"Parents don't understand or don't necessarily have the knowledge that he straps need to be pretty snug on the chest. The harsh retainer clip needs to be leveled with the arm pits and the seat once it's installed shouldn't move an inch side to side or forwards and backwards," said Kirby.

Kirby says parents should keep in mind that they should remove kids heavy winter outerwear before placing them in the seat. For those parents, who didn't have a safe car seat today, they received a new one. If you have questions about your childs car seat, contact the Hannibal Fire Department or the Marion County Health Department.
