Don't forget your furry friends in this frigid weather. That's a reminder from the Hannibal Police Department.

Captain Jim Hark says in the past the Department has seen many pets left out in the cold, with no access to water or shelter.

Right now animal control officers answer tips from concerned neighbors.

But now Hannibal Police plan to be more proactive.

Now while they're out on regular calls in local neighborhoods, they'll be looking out for animals which can't fend for themselves.\

Cpt. Hark said, "I think its important for officers to keep their eyes open. It's doesn't mean officers will be walking through neighborhood but in the normal course of duty, they're going to be sensitive to this issue."

Beebe says snow emergency routes are also chosen carefully. They're located every two or three blocks so most residents have one nearby in order to access the entire city.
