QUINCY -- You usually see potholes popping up everywhere in the spring.

But they actually pop up through the winter too.

Quincy Central Services crews are out and about over the next couple of weeks fixing some of the holes that have popped up already.

"Typically what happens is the moisture we've had gets under the asphalt and it freezes and expands and when it thaws out, there's a void there. When a vehicle hits them, it creates a pothole," says Mike Beebe the director of Quincy Central Services.

Crews are out over the next couple of weeks fixing what holes have already popped up so to avoid future, more costly holes later in the year.

Can the city of Quincy afford these potholes?

"Sure. This is typical. This is nothing out of the ordinary. We budget accordingly every year," says Beebe.

But we're just barely into winter, which means we're likely to get more potholes before spring.

Is this year particularly bad for potholes in Quincy?

"I don't think so. It's just like any other year. It's typical. We know that after everything thaws out, this is what we deal with," says Beebe.

That means crews will be back out in the spring fixing any more potholes that pop up.
