DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- The Des Moines school district will cut $3.3 million from its current year's budget, reducing spending on special education.
The district's chief financial officer, Patti Schroeder, told school board members on Tuesday that staffing won't be affected, but that job cuts may be necessary in the future.
The cuts outlined by Schroeder include $400,000 in special education; $36,000 in programs for students learning to speak English; and $360,000 in education materials, including delaying textbook purchases until next fiscal year.
Other savings will be accomplished through a hiring freeze and eliminating out-of-district travel and overtime.
The cuts are in response to Gov. Chet Culver's order for a 1.5 percent across-the-board cut in state spending.
