MDH sponsors annual "Straight Talk" program
MACOMB, IL -- In this day and and age, young kids see a lot. Whether they're influenced by their peers in the classroom, or what they see on television, community leaders want to make sure kids are equipped to make the right choices.
The Community Outreach committee of McDonough District Hospital Development Council hosted its annual "Straight Talk program for area sixth graders at WIU Thursday.
The program's designed to help young people obtain accurate health and safety information to prepare them for teenage and later years.
Kids attended sessions on personal hygiene and fitness, as well diversity, appearance and impressions...even cyber bullying.
"Now's the time they're forming their habits. It's just the ideal time for prevention with health education, we always want to catch these kids while they're young, because when they're older, they already have habits that gravitate towards, and it's hard to change habits when you're older," said MDH Health Educator Sharon Bertlett.
Berlett says it's never too late for parents to educate or talk with their kids about personal health and the tough choices they face.
