DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- The Lee County sheriff won't be able to carry a gun or make an arrest for about nine months.

That's because Sheriff H.D. "Buck" Jones signed an application from his son to become a reserve deputy that didn't disclose an earlier conviction.

The sheriff says the issue was essentially a paperwork mistake by his son, Gentry Jones, and not caught by himself or the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.

The academy's council found Sheriff Jones wasn't trying to mislead anyone but suspended his license for certifying false information.

Sheriff Jones says he knew his son pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury for a 1994 incident. But, he insists he didn't look at the names on reserve deputy applications when he signed them.
