Stove sets off fire in downtown Quincy

QUINCY, IL -- Quincy firefighters fought a small fire in this bitterly cold weather.

A small fire broke out on the second floor of 618 Maine Street around 10am Wednesday morning.

Assistant Chief Keith Frank told KHQA the fire started because a flue pipe on a stove wasn't vented properly.

With the recent fire at 514 Hampshire, fire chief Scott Walker told KHQA, you can never be too cautious with downtown buildings.

"Anytime we have a fire downtown, because the buildings are so close together, you always have the possibility that if a fire gets deep into the building or gains a lot of head way that it'll expand into the buildings next to it," Walker said.

Walker says that's why it's critical to call 911 right away, at the first sign of danger. Walker said crews had control of the blaze within minutes. The apartment has minimal damage.  No one was hurt.
