60 students from grades 9-12 will be on hand for the Inauguration of America's first black president.
HAMILTON, IL -- Tuesday, January 20th may be one of the biggest Inauguration Days in U.S. history and some Hamilton High School students will be able to experience that history in person.
60 students from grades 9-12 will be on hand for the Inauguration of America's first black president.
Students will be leaving this Saturday and will be kept busy until the Inauguration.
We spoke with Hamilton History teacher David Artman about the trip.
He says this is something that will stick with the students the rest of their lives.
KHQA also spoke with a few students who are very excited to be able to witness history.
"To me they see history in person," said Artman. "You can get any information out of a book, but when you see something in person you learn more that way by experiencing the whole ordeal."
"Not many people have been able to see the inauguration," said Hamilton Junior Anna Gibbs and I'm only a junior and I'm getting to do it."
"I'm really excited," said Hamilton Junior Jessica Morehouse. "I think its going to be a lot of fun, being with your friends and getting to see something that nobody else sees. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity for us."
Besides being on hand for Inauguration Day, students will also get to attend the Inaugural Ball and witness the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetary.
Students will also get to tour George Washington's home at Mt. Vernon, visit all the war memorials, the Holocaust Museum and the Smithsonian Institute.
