Consolidation would save tax payer money in the long run

LEE COUNTY -- Lee County is a step closer to consolidating its 911 services.

You'll remember we told you in November that county law enforcement agencies were still debating whether or not to merge.  A feasibility study was done, committee members estimate that a consolidated dispatch center would cost more than $639,000 in its first year.

Cities and counties would split cost of wages and employees pay.  Ft. Madison and Keokuk would pay 30.1%  Lee County, 31.2%  West Point, Montrose, and Donnellson would share 2.5%  Franklin, Houghton, and St. Paul would pay just under 1%

Committee members believe consolidating services would save money in the long run, but getting the plan off the ground could pose a challenge.

Sheriff Buck jones says believes many entities are onboard with the plan.

"I believe cities of Ft. Madison and Keokuk are behind this. The other small towns I believe they will. It's not about cost. It's about the safety factor for the citizens of the county," Jones said.

"Anytime you're dealing with change, you obviously have an input from the citizens and that's one of the biggest things and one of the most important things that we want to make sure our citizens understand the program and they have their ample time for their input," said Chairman of the Lee County Board Supervisors Gary Folluo.

In order for this consolidation to become a reality, cities and counties will have to sign an agreement.  Another public meeting is planned for February 16 at 7pm at the Ft. Madison Community Hospital to discuss the issue further.
