The first game for The Hannibal Cavemen is scheduled for June
HANNIBAL, MO -- 2009 will be bringing new events to downtown Hannibal.
The first game for the Hannibal Cavemen baseball team is set for June 4th, 2009.
We found out how the preparation process is going leading up to the season for this KHQA FactFinder Report.
Construction is well underway to turn Clemens Field into the home of the Cavemen.
The stadium will have 2,500 seats, with the capability of adding a few hundred more if necessary.
Owner Larry Owens tells us about 40% of the tickets have already been sold and is expecting to sell out most games, especially games against the Quincy Gems.
He also said at some point they have to stop selling season tickets so people can by single game tickets.
The stadium will contain a lot of history, as some parts will be modeled after the way the stadium was in the 1930's.
"I talk to people daily that say, hey this is the field I played on, this is where my son played here or the field my dad played on," said GM Mark Sanders, "so there's always history with everybody you talk to with this field."
"It's exciting, its going to be exciting here," said Owner Larry Owens. "This will be 100 years since they played Quincy in baseball on this field, 100 years ago was the first time they played. It's an old rivalry."
Owens says the Cavemen should bring about$4 million of fresh money to Hannibal.
The renovated stadium will also allow for more venues such as concerts and festivals to be held in the city.
