Hannibal middle school students compete for national competition

HANNIBAL, MO -- More than a hundred Hannibal Middle School students got a lesson in the past, present, and future.

The students took history into their own hands, and showcased to the public Saturday what they've learned for this year's National History Day competition.

This year's theme: The Individual in History, Actions and Legacies.

7th and 8th graders honed their talents to produce creative projects in the form of exhibits, documentaries, historical papers, and performances.

Such figures on display this afternoon in the schools cafeteria were Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, and Adolf Hitler.

But 13 year old Mikayla Murphy chose former president Franklin D. Roosevelt because it seems the past may be repeating itself.

"Our economy isn't in the best of shape right now and he got us out of the depression and so I figured he'd be a great man to do," said Murphy.

Entries were judged based on the students research.

14 students qualified for the regionals in Kirksville, with the hopes to make it to the national competition to be held in June at the University of Maryland.
