Univ. sponsors alcohol-free activities
U of Ia. drinking crackdown
IOWA CITY, IA. (AP) -- In an effort to shake its image among some as an alcohol-soaked party school, the University of Iowa is putting $50,000 toward supporting alcohol-free late night activities.
School officials say students will pitch the idea and, if it's approved, the school will fund it.
The University of Iowa was ranked the 12th-best party school in the country in the 2008 Princeton Review survey of 120,000 students.
Events like midnight movie showings have already ginned up interest, and student organizations have mentioned comedy nights, concerts and adventure programs among the possible booze-free activities.
School officials want to disperse the entire $50,000 this semester.
