FORT MADISON, IA -- Fort Madison firefighter, David Behne, made his first big save after just four weeks with the department.

A man called the fire department when he saw a dog paddling through the Mississippi River this weekend.

Behne and Captain Kern found the yellow lab floating near a duck blind about 150 yards from the shore and in bad shape.

"When we pulled the dog out of the water, he wasn't fighting very hard anymore," Behne said. "More than another minute or two would have been his last, so we got there just in time."

The dog didn't have any ID tags, so the man who spotted her took her home.

She made a full recovery.

The man wants to remain anonymous and is disappointed he can't keep the dog he helped save.

So, she needs a good home.

Contact the Fort Madison Fire Department at (319) 372-6472 if you know the dog's owner or would like to adopt a young yellow lab.
