The increase would take place over a two year period
KEOKUK, Iowa - Iowa drivers, get ready...you could see the price of gasoline go up in the state by eight cents over a two year period.
Governor Chet Culver is against the increase but there is support from state lawmakers.
If it does go through, the increase would add about $168 million per year to the state's coffers.
Gas prices in Keokuk, Iowa on Tuesday were around $1.77 per gallon.
That's compared to $1.79 per gallon in West Quincy, Missouri and $1.91 per gallon in Quincy, Illinois.
