Bridge functions, but operates a little slower
HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) - The railroad bridge that crosses the Mississippi River at Hannibal is working without restrictions -just not very quickly.
The Norfolk Southern bridge has to be raised when large river traffic moves through. The process should take about three minutes. But a broken coupling on one of the drive shafts means the raising process takes 10 minutes.
Officials say the coupling needs to be replaced; until it is, the bridge is working on auxiliary power, which causes the slower movement. The U.S. Coast Guard raised concerns on Monday. But on Tuesday, the Coast Guard said the bridge was functional enough. However, mariners are being required to give bridge operators 30 minutes' notice before they come through.
