DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa lawmakers have put on hold an idea to merge up to two-thirds of the state's 362 school districts to improve student achievement. Instead, they want to study it for at least the rest of the year.
Sen. Matt McCoy, D-Des Moines, has outlined an idea to merge districts with fewer than 750 students. He says it could save millions of dollars in expenses that could be better spent on teachers and students.
The Iowa State Education Association, the state's largest union, is among the group opposed to legislation that would essentially force school mergers. Union President Chris Bern it's something that needs to be looked at, but the focus should be what's best for students.
