Scotland County school resumes; basketball game rescheduled
Scotland County students were in school today, and a suspect was apprehended after a bomb threat at the school Tuesday night.
Students, staff and fans were evacuated from the Scotland County gym after the threat was called in during a basketball game against Clark County.
The suspect is being described only as a juvenile.
Principal Ken Cross spent until after midnight helping law enforcement and fire personnel search the building. Bomb-sniffing dogs finished up at about 2:30 a.m., and students and staff were in class just a few hours later.
Cross had his doubts at first about having school, but after a thorough six-hour search turned up nothing and a suspect was apprehended, he's confident students are safe here at Scotland County R-1.
"The three-hour search, the other three-hour search with the dog, and the person who made the call made a statement saying there was no bomb. So, with those three facts we felt very safe coming to school today," Cross said. "I feel safe here because I feel like I've got a feel for the kids. It was an isolated incident."
Cross feels the young person who called in the threat didn't mean to hurt anyone, but just made a mistake.
Cross told us it took him only two seconds to decide to evacuate the gym last night after the threat came in.
The game was highly anticipated, so the gym was packed with fans from both schools.
Fans from both sides evacuated calmly to allow law enforcement do their jobs and for the school to follow its emergency plan.
The Scotland County-Clark County basketball game has been rescheduled for Feb. 14th at the Scotland County High School gym.
