Created February 1999
(Macomb, IL) The Go West Bus system started as a 3 bus, 2 route system in 1999
It has grown to a 28 bus, 12 route system.
A celebration was held March 2 to mark the 10 year anniversary of the transit system.
The bus system now carries more than 55,000 people a week and more than 1.6 million a year.
Since its creation it has carried more than 11 million riders.
But as Go West Director Jude Kiah told KHQA today, the celebration was not about the system or the busses...it was about the drivers.
"Our drivers have come to work every day and they're the ones that built this system," said Kiah. "We started with only three drivers and now we have almost 50. Go West has brought job to the area but our drivers enable other people to get to their jobs, to get to their work, to get to school, medical appointments, shopping or whatever"
Kiah said Go West provides for cleaner air, less traffic and economic development, but the most important thing is that its success shows how different departments throughout the city of Macomb can work together.
