DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Republican legislators are calling for cutting business taxes to spur the economy.

The GOP lawmakers announced their plan Wednesday, saying it would give the economy an immediate jolt.

The package includes giving businesses a tax credit of 50 percent of the salary for each newly created job. Republicans also supported the appointment of an ombudsman who would advocate for business interests.

Senate Minority Leader Paul McKinley says all the proposals were aimed to help small businesses. He contrasted the Republican ideas with Democratic proposals, which he says will only grow government.

Given Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, McKinley concedes passage of the plan could be difficult.
