QUINCY, IL -- While many workers may find all the snow to be a hassle, a lot of white means a lot of green for others.
KHQA rode along with a local snow plower who says while snow days might be fun and games for kids, they make for long days and hard work in his business.
An "average'' snow day turns out to be a long one --14 to 18 hours depending on the amount of snow.
Curtis Shaffer is used to long days as co-owner of Shaffer Trucking near Ursa. But since there is less demand for trucking on a snow day like this, his crews are putting their time and effort to the plows.
"It's nice to be able to utilize our manpower and equipment when we can't be on the road,'' said Shaffer. "When we're fortunate to do both, it's a good day!"
Shaffer says snow plowers normally charge around $55 per hour and up, depending on the size of the parking lot.
Most parking lots take 30 minutes to an hour to clear. And with the number of clients on his list, it makes for a long--but profitable--day. That just goes to show that there's no business like snow business.
Shaffer asks that if you are driving or walking through parking lots, don't try to beat the snow plow. They are pushing a lot of heavy snow and may not see you or be able to stop in time.
