CHICAGO (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Roland Burris is asking permission of the Senate's Select Committee on Ethics to form a legal expense fund.

Burris, with the aid of the law firm of Gonzalez, Saggio & Harlan, filed his request with the committee on Monday.

Burris attorney Tim Wright is on the staff of the law firm. Named as a trustee of the fledgling committee is Roderick Sawyer, former Chicago Mayor Eugene Sawyer's son.

Sangamon County State's Attorney John Schmidt is reviewing Burris' testimony before the Illinois House impeachment panel to determine if criminal charges are warranted.

Rod Blagojevich appointed Burris to fill President Barack Obama's former seat when he was the state's governor. Blagojevich was later impeached by the Illinois Legislature after being accused of trying to sell the seat.
