Can help protect hearing

A common complaint for those who workout is when they wear ear buds to listen to music, they fall out while they exercise.

There may be a way around that.

Dr. Dax Moss is an audiologist with Quincy Medical Group. He's just one of several doctors in the tri-states that can outfit you with custom molded ear buds. By being custom molded, they stay in your ear, and I'm told are pretty comfortable.

"They reduce background noise so you don't have to turn your ipod up as loud," says Dr. Moss.

A good thing for me since I jack up the volume on my mp3 player while I mow grass. That means my poor ears have to hear the loud music, and the sound of the mower. But you don't want all of the background noise gone.

How safe are they to use, as far as if you're a jogger. Will you still be able to hear ambiant noise?

"Yes. You'll still hear a fire truck go by if you need to," says Dr. Moss.

A pair of custom molded ear buds cost around $120.00, and they are not covered by insurance. And if you're not a music lover, but like to chat on the phone, custom molded ear buds might be for you too.

"They are also used for blue tooth. So you can hear better as opposed to the standard stock earpiece," says Dr. Moss.

The molds are made in the doctors office.

"Just have some silicone put in your ear, and it sets up in five minutes," says Dr. Moss.

It's completely painless, although I can atest first hand, a rather odd feeling. The molds are sent away to be made into the custome ear buds. They're back in about two weeks. You then come back into the doctor's office for a fitting, and you're on your way.

You can also have custom molded ear plugs made.

That could come in handy if you work around a lot of noise.

Custom molded ear plugs would drown out noise that regular ear plugs don't.
