Compromise strength of levee

(Hannibal, Mo.)  Trees growing on the levee in Downtown Hannibal will have to be removed.  During an annual inspection of that levee and the Bear Creek Dam, US Army Corps of Engineers inspectors were concerned about trees growing on and around the levee.  Trees roots create spaces where water can flow throughout the levee, which could make the levee weaker.  All of the trees on the levee will need to be removed, as well as any trees within 15 feet from the bottom of the slope.
