Northern snowmelt could pose problem here
Quincy, IL-- Officials with a new Midwest flooding task force say all but two of the levees damaged in 2008 flooding have been fixed. We talked to Vice Chairman of the Upper Mississippi Illinois Missouri River Association Mike Klingner. He told us there's still lots of work to be done.
Klingner told us the heights may be in place, but work needs to be done across the sectional areas. The Hunt/Lima lake district still has a lot of interior work. The Army Corps of Engineers has to dredge about 300,000 cubic yards of sand to repair several levee drainage districts.
But another concern is the 18 inches of rain and snow melt in North Dakota. The town of Fargo faces record breaking flooding, and that could be headed our way.
Mike Klingner says,"We are concerned, we are watching it. It looks like right now the main thing we have to watch for is the series of rains. A lot of that snow packed in our water shed has passed us by."
Klingner says we're in a saturated condition, meaning if we were to have several weeks of wet weather, that could spell trouble.
He says the biggest concern is along the Illinois River, which has had unusual high water levels.
