ADHD drugs carry risk of heart problems
There's a new warning for people being treated for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Nearly 4.5 million school children have been diagnosed with ADHD. The FDA says Ritalin, Adderol, Strattera and ALL other ADHD drugs carry a slight risk of psychiatric and heart problems. And it's now requiring manufacturers to say so on the labels.
The government says more than 500 cases of side effects have been reported in girls and women who got the new cervical cancer vaccine. However, most cases like fainting and soreness would come with any vaccine--and health officials say no additional warning labels are needed. Merck, who makes the shot, was lobbying states to make the vaccine a requirement for adolescent girls. But earlier this week the company announced it was dropping the campaign.
And health care spending is on the rise and expected to go even higher. Health care is expected to account for $1 out of every $5 spent in the U.S. in another decade. That means a rise in out-of-pocket expenses such as the co-pays for medicine from about $850 this year to about $1,400 a year in 2016.
